An Introduction: What is Mafia?
Mafia is a Social Deduction game from way back, it has been popular for quite a long time and has found many adaptations, a well known one would be the game Werewolves, or the steam game Town of Salem.
If you are a complete beginner and have never heard of this, then just imagine it as what it says. A social deduction games main aspects are the social and deduction ones.
In most social deduction games players are divided in good and evil, the evil are usually outnumbered at the start while the good people make up the majority, it is now the good peoples mission to find and eliminate the evil players that hide in their community.
This is done by discussing with each other, accusing each other and finally trying to deduce who is lying and who is telling the truth. It's a game of guessing, taking chances and most of all, intuition, wits and charisma.
How does Mafia here work?
The Basics:
Mafia on this server is played similar to what is described above. In the majority of games you will have two teams, the Town Members, who are the good guys and the Mafia Members, who are the bad guys. The Mafia has only a handful of players, but they know each others identities. The town on the other hand has many more players, but they are in the dark in terms of who is what.
There can also be Neutrals in a game of mafia that would form a third party, but that is not part of every game, so we'll not discuss that here for now.
Roles:
Players also, in addition to their alignment to either the mafia or the town, receive a role for themselves, those roles can have special abilities, or no abilities at all, usually it is known before the game starts which roles can be part of the game. which roles are able to appear in a game and not
More on roles can be found here.
Phases and Voting:
Usually a game of mafia will be played throughout progressing phases, generally called day and night phases which alternate between each other. A game often starts with a day phase.
The Day Phase - During a day phase the players are allowed to discuss with each other and additionally, players are able to vote other players that they suspect might be against the town.
Voting has a very important purpose in a game of mafia. It is each players way of trying to remove the evil players from the game. In many games voting during the day will be the only way for the town to win the game. You should take every opportunity to vote out someone you think is evil, as it will often be the only way for you to win.
More on voting and its terminology can be found here.
The Night Phase - Players will not be able to discuss during the night. Although the mafia are able to discuss plans with each other in a private chat, additionally they can vote to kill a player of the town.
In addition to the mafia killing someone and using other actions they may have, some players not aligned with the mafia may also have special abilities they can now perform during the night. More on which roles there could be can be found on the roles page.
Winning:
Only the win conditions for the Town and the Mafia will be discussed here, if you are interested in a full list of win conditions, check out This Article. Winning a game for your faction is usually very simple as it normally just involves eliminating the opposing faction. The win conditions listed here are the most common win conditions.
Town win: The town members win when they eliminate all players who pose a threat to them, usually the mafia.
Mafia win: The mafia wins when they have more members currently alive than there are town members alive, or nothing could prevent this from happening anymore.
Time:
Time is a very important aspect of our games. And here we separate ourselves, to parts greatly, from some other mafia communities. We want all our players no matter where they are on earth to be able to be a part of the game and get their time to discuss. To accomplish that we adapted to a marathon-style version of mafia. Which arguably is nothing new, but many other communities focus more on fast paced games of nothing more than a couple minutes per game.
For us this usually means that a day phase will last for 48 hours of real life time and a night phase for 24 hours of real life time. This ensures that all players get a chance to participate in all of our games, no matter what their time zone or working/school condition is. We want everyone to be able to feel involved in our games and strive to provide the best experience possible.
