In this article, you can find and read up on the Neutrals, also known as third party roles. They are a set of irregular roles who do not hail for any particular faction and have unique win conditions.
Description[]
Often, you will find few, if any Neutral roles in a game of Mafia. Usually, they are meant to either mix up the role list, or balance out the game by adding another role that is not part of the Town, but also not aligned with the Mafia. Neutrals can have varying kinds of win conditions from simply surviving the game to murdering every single other player in the game.
Playstyle and Objectives[]
As Neutral roles are so varied, their playstyle is also very different depending on the Neutral role at hand, making describing an overarching playstyle difficult. However, as Neutrals are not part of the Town and can in almost any scenario decide which side to side with, or have to eliminate the Town as part of their win condition, they are considered a threat by Town aligned players and should, similar to the Mafia, attempt to deceive the players aligned with the Town in order to survive, although for the most part, simply to ensure their own survival.
Faction Colour[]
Neutral roles do not belong to a particular faction, however, their overarching colour is usually displayed in grey. That being said, each Neutral role is associated with a unique colour, making them distinct from every other Neutral role.
Sub-Alignments[]
Neutrals have a variety of so called "sub-alignments", which are meant to categorize them towards their individual win conditions. Both Neutral Killing and Neutral Evil roles have standardized win conditions, while Neutral Benign and Neutral Chaos roles have unique win conditions for every role within their sub-alignment.
Win Condition[]
Neutrals don't have an overall normalized win condition, however, there are two sub-alignments within the Neutral roles that do.
Neutral Evil
- You win if the Town does not win the game.
This means that this role wins as long as not a single member of the Town wins the game. Additionally, these roles automatically win a 1v1 against a Town member who is unable to kill them.
Neutral Killing
- Eliminate the Mafia, Town and other factions as well as Neutral threats that do not share your role.
This means that all of the following need to be eliminated in order for the Neutral Killing to win.
- All members of the Town.
- All members of the Mafia.
- All members of the Coven.
- All Neutral Killing roles that are not their own role.
- Some additional Neutrals.
