This page details the suggestions for/restrictions on creating roles for Grand Idea Mafia. This goes into more detail than the rules listed in the main article do! The secondary bullet points detail specifics or why the rules were implemented.
If you have any issues with the rules as they currently are, whether you want some added, removed, or changed, please dm Quack-Attack#5514 on discord!
- The only allowed Alignments for cards submitted to GIM are Town, Mafia, Coven, and Neutral.
- More custom alignments used to be allowed but it just led to every faction being tiny and having very few members in game.
- The Coven is a special faction in the popular social deduction game Town of Salem. Members of this faction are usually magic themed roles (like witch) and have some sort of interaction with the Necronomicon, a buffing item that only 1 coven member can have at a time (and only starting on night 3).
- The only allowed Sub-Alignments are our official sub-alignments as found on the wiki.
- All Coven roles typically go under the Coven Evil category and will always be given the Necronomicon in a random order. The new subalignment added for Coven in our server is Coven Head. This alignment indicates that this role is typically more powerful and receives the Necronomicon first. A max of 1 Coven Head roles may roll per game.
- All cards must be role cards. No other type of card is allowed (such as events, items, etc.)
- In the past, we allowed events and other types of non-role cards. These caused too much chaos and eventually made the game too unfun.
- A card is not allowed to influence the rolling process beyond rolling one additional rolecard if the card, or the type of card, rolled alongside it is absolutely required for the card submitted to function.
- For example, if two roles are explicitly created to mechanically work together, then they can be rolled together. But roles that just say to fill up a random faction are not allowed.
- Town is not allowed to have permanent passive defense.
- No role can permanently take away a killing players ability to kill.
- No role can permanently take away or lower another players passive defense if they have any.
- All roles can at maximum perform one action/ability per phase.
- Roles may have passive abilities alongside their one ability per phase and they may have multiple abilities for the player to choose from.
- If an ability is not specified as a day or night ability, it will always be assumed to be a night ability.
- This is to keep things consistent.
- No role should be permanently invincible in defense or permanently be able to have unstoppable attacks from game start to game end.
- No posting of standard/vanilla/forum/Town of Salem (ToS) rolecards or named standard/vanilla/forum/ToS rolecards. However using mechanics from those rolecards is allowed. Keep submissions original.
- Town, Mafia and Coven may only have their standard win condition. Exceptions may be made in the case of roles like lovers.
- DM Quack about exceptions!
- Town, Mafia and Coven roles are not allowed to have the ability of changing other players' win conditions.
- Roles that let the player pick their own role are not allowed.
- No reposting of roles already submitted. Also posting your role multiple times is not allowed.
After reading these, I highly suggestion checking out the guide on Creating Roles for an in depth explanation of all parts of a rolecard!
